Viewing of the DAKOTA 38 + 2 Memorial Ride Documentary

December 19, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Dakota 38 + 2

On, Thursday, December 19th the Offices of Diversity and Inclusion, Access Opportunity Success and Oyate Club at Southwest Minnesota State University will host a viewing of the documentary “DAKOTA 38” and dialogue with 2013 riders.  The documentary is about the annual recognition of what happened on December 26, 1862 in the Mankato area. It is the story of their journey- the blizzards they endure, the Native and Non-Native communities that house and feed them along the way, and the dark history they are beginning to wipe away.

Local hosts for the 2013 Dakota Riders on December 19th are SMSU Oyate Club, SMSU Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), Access Opportunity Success (AOS), Living Word Lutheran Church and Clean Up the River Environment (CURE).

In the spring of 2005, Jim Miller, a Native spiritual leader and Vietnam veteran, found himself in a dream riding on horseback across the great plains of South Dakota. Just before he awoke, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged. At the time, Jim knew nothing of the largest mass execution in United States history, ordered by Abraham Lincoln on December 26, 1862. “When you have dreams, you know when they come from the creator… As any recovered alcoholic, I made believe that I didn’t get it. I tried to put it out of my mind, yet it’s one of those dreams that bother you night and day.”

With all of the issues plaguing Native communities everywhere, “We can’t blame the wasichus (white people) anymore. We’re doing it to ourselves. We’re selling drugs. We’re killing our own people. That’s what this ride is about, is healing.”

Now, four years later, embracing the message of the dream, Miller and a group of riders retrace the 330-mile route of his dream on horseback from Lower Brule, South Dakota to Mankato, Minnesota to arrive at the hanging site on the anniversary of the execution.   This year ride begins on December 9th from Lower Brule, SD and the riders arrive in Mankato on December 26th.  The riders are scheduled to arrive in Pipestone on Tuesday, Dec. 17th, Russell on Wednesday, Dec. 18th, Marshall on Thursday, Dec. 19th and Morton on Friday, Dec. 20th – Dec. 22nd.  There will be a Wacipi on Saturday, Dec. 21st at the Morton Community Center with MC Dave Larson and host drum – Elk Soldier.

The riders will be at the Land of Memories in Mankato at the hanging site of the Dakota 38 at 10am.  For more information about the Dakota 38 ride please visit their website at www.Dakota38.org
