About David Bly

David Bly is a lifelong resident of Northfield, Minnesota and a five-term member of the Minnesota House of Representatives for District 20B, which includes Northfield, Dundas, Lonsdale, Montgomery, and surrounding townships.

In 2016 Bly published “We All Do Better: Economic Priorities for a Land of Opportunity.” In this book, he shows how a middle-class economy is built on actions we take together. Tax cuts for the rich, small government and ideological shouting matches will never get us where we need to be. Instead, Bly argues we must focus on the five essential building blocks for a Land of Opportunity in the modern age: transportation, health care for everyone, a world-class education system, safe and clean energy systems, and living wages for working people.

Bly worked as an educator in Minnesota public schools for 30 years and he came to realize that the success of the individual and community are closely intertwined. When you connect people to resources and opportunities, there are better outcomes for the individuals and the community. In the words of the late U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, “We all do better when we all do better.”

Bly recently announced his retirement from the Minnesota House at the end of 2018.
