Join residents of Swift and Chippewa Counties in asking the Swift County Board of Commissioners for Environmental Review of a Proposed Hog Factory Farm
Please take a moment to add your name to the list of concerned citizens who live or own property in Minnesota and want to ensure the health of water resources in the Minnesota River Watershed.
Landowners in Swift County are petitioning the Swift County Board of Commissioners to conduct an environmental review of a factory farm operation proposed by Apple Valley Hog Cooperative in West Bank Township. Residents have not been provided with sufficient information about the details of this proposed project, including its exact location, the maximum number of hogs to be housed at each building, and how animal waste would be managed to avoid contaminating nearby surface and groundwater sources.
If built, the project has the potential to discharge pollutants into Cottonwood Creek before draining into the Chippewa River and ultimately ending up in the Minnesota River. The Minnesota River is already an impaired waterway, with a significant number of factory farms located within the watershed. In fact, an existing factory farm is located across the border in Chippewa County. The cumulative impact of these facilities has the potential to significantly impact downstream waters and threatens Minnesotans’ ability to enjoy the quality and quantity of these treasured resources.
