Petition for Environmental Review of Great River Energy’s proposed permit change for the Cambridge Station power plant
Great River Energy (GRE) is asking the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to amend their existing permit for the Cambridge Station power plant located in Cambridge, MN. That plant currently is permitted to burn only natural gas. GRE is asking the PUC to make a “minor modification” to their permit that would allow GRE to burn both natural gas and diesel WITHOUT Environmental Review.
This is problematic for a couple of reasons –
- Adding diesel fuel to the plant will significantly increase the plant’s emissions of greenhouse gases, arsenic, mercury, sulfur dioxide, and other hazardous air pollutants. This is not a “minor modification”; it is a huge step backward for Minnesota’s climate efforts.
- The diesel fuel will be transported to the plant by semi-trucks emitting even more dangerous fumes while adding to congestion on local roadways.
- This plant is proximal to a school, an outdoor sports complex, and residential areas will greatly amplify the impact on human health.
By signing this petition, you are asking the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission not to approve the request by Great River Energy to add diesel as a fuel option for their Cambridge Plant without Environmental Review.
